Cuba has been inaccessible to most Americans for 50 years. My story is not about that period, but about what I experienced in mid-November, 2016, when I went for a one-week photography workshop with a professional photographer, to see how people live, work and play in this country, a mere 45 – minute flight from Miami.
It is my hope to share a few observations about their everyday life and culture, and, along with photographic images, to help viewers visualize what I experienced. Our group of 7 had the opportunity to travel within Havana and Old Havana, passing through Cienfuegos and then for two fascinating days in Trinidad. We had quite a few conversations with locals, especially if they were speaking English.
We felt at ease roaming around all areas, watching the incredible classic cars zoom by, and talking with and photographing local Cubans.
